  • Mayors Welcome Message

On behalf of Members of Ottawa City Council, it is my distinct pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all those participating in the District 61 Toastmasters Conference, taking place at the Brookstreet Hotel in Canada's capital.

As Head of Council, I am delighted to offer my moral support to District 61 Toastmasters for providing a valuable forum for some 300 members from across Eastern Ontario, Québec and Upper State New York to convene under the theme BELIEVE/IMAGINEZ. Participants will have an opportunity to hone their public speaking skills and develop their leadership capabilities in an educational and inspirational format.

I want also to acknowledge District 61 Toastmasters, along with the facilitators, and keynote speakers for dedicating efforts, expertise and resources to the successful organization of this educational and inspirational meeting.

As Mayor of the host city, I invite visitors to explore the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame and the Barbara Ann Scott Gallery at City Hall, as well as the revitalized Lansdowne Park and new TD Place, home of the Ottawa REDBLACKS CFL team, and Ottawa Fury FC North American Soccer League team.

Allow me to convey my best wishes to the participants for a rewarding experience, and to the visitors for a most enjoyable stay in Ottawa.

    Sincerely,

    Jim Watson, Mayor

  • International Director's Message

As you enjoy your conference this weekend, you should know that over 332,000 Toastmasters are also celebrating in a similar fashion in 95 other Districts around the world. Like each of you, they too will BELIEVE in their own personal greatness.

This is an exciting time to be a Toastmaster. The pilot of the revitalized education program is underway. Upgraded club officer training materials, including e-learning modules, are starting to impact the quality of our club meetings for each and every member, and your District is blessed with a leadership team of the highest integrity and dedication.

Every one of us has the privilege of helping others achieve greatness in their lives by believing in themselves and participating in the many communication and leadership programs available in Toastmasters. You may even find that, in helping others, you too will start to BELIEVE in your own personal super power.

This weekend you will meet new friends and reconnect with long lasting acquaintances. Whether this is your first Conference or you are a seasoned veteran, I hope you leave energized and excited to take what you learn here, and implement it in your own club to help all your members believe, grow and succeed.

By the way, don't forget to have fun.

    Speaker: Craig Senior, ACS, CL

    Education Seminar

    Room: Mulligan

The Toastmasters High Performance Leadership gives a super way to form and lead a group, but across generations of leaders, often the only process we perfect is reinvent the wheel. This workshop fills that gap and will leave you profoundly changed. Embrace Excellence.

    Speaker: Jim Carty, DTM

    jQuery Master Class

    Room: Mulligan

Leadership –“the art of guiding or directing people to perform at a higher level of excellence than they would on their own”. While distilling leadership down to a few letters or words may seem improbable, once you understand the ABCs you will never lead in the same direction again.

  • First Impressions
    (Communication)

    Speaker: Jack Gammon, DTM

    HTML5 & CSS3

    Room: Traders

Your success depends in large part on your ability to communicate well with your entourage. Good communicators are usually effective public speakers and tend to be good leaders. Most people are shy or nervous about speaking in public and would rather have a root canal instead of delivering a speech. According to Toastmasters International, fear of speaking in public, is the second greatest fear after death. This workshop is designed to initiate you to some basic public speaking skills and tips. Come appreciate the value of being able to express your ideas.

  • Be a Conscious Superhero
    (Personal Development)

    Speaker: Marian Meade, CTM

    jQuery Master Class

    Room: Mulligan

Conscious superheroes know that negative, unfocused thinking is kryptonite to their success. To combat this villain, they practice mindfulness on a daily basis. “Mindfulness is like a saddle, and our brains, a wild horse”, say Buddhists. Mindfulness practice can be incorporated into your day for seconds at a time and offer the following benefits:
Get out of your head and live in the here and now.
Feel at peace in spite of what’s going on around you.
    Increase your self-awareness.
    Improve your relationships.
Decline the invitation to be fearful and worried, like when you're about to step up to the podium!
Design your future by deliberately choosing your thoughts.
Use your energy to live the life you are in now.
    Have more access to joy!
