At carnival time in Grenada , Trinidad , and many of the other Caribbean islands, the jab jab comes out to parade.

His name is a creolised version of the French word for devil, (diable), and like the devil, he delights in usurping the more staid side of the status quo in order to establish a reign of chaotic fun and merry-making for as long as the carnival lasts.

His intent is mischievous, not diabolical.

Andre and Ross Whiteman are from Grenada , and Wayne Stoute is from Trinidad . They have always chuckled at the daring antics and mock ferocity of the jab jab. When they decided to form a band, this inspiration led them to use that very name for their group.

While they form the nucleus of Jab Jab, they often surround themselves with keyboards, percussion, brass, singers and dancers.

Jab Jab performs a blend of Caribbean and African styles which they refer to as popfrolic. The Trinidadian style of soca and calypso is predominant in their sound, but the strains of musical genres from Jamaica to the Congo are readily detectable in their compositions.

Jab Jab's versatility and musicianship have made of them a sought-after group for accompanying artists from may different backgrounds. Individually, each member has been involved in numerous projects for other artists, including recording and production. Jab Jab's CD “Jump up and Jam” had been nominated for the worldbeat award at the 1996 ADISQ awards in Quebec , Canada.

The group is currently recording its second CD. www. jabjab.ca/
